Talented Eastern Cape songbird Pearl Sonjica, is striving to make her dreams come true in the tough music business, she shares experiences of her chosen career with TEC.

TEC: When did you realise your passion for music?

PS: I started singing back at Sunday school when I was much younger and I also used to imitate music legends like Brenda Fassie, Rebecca Malope and apperantly I was good at it.

TEC: How did you know you can sing?

PS: I knew there was something about my singing because I attracted crowds wherever I was and was applauded every time I sang. Sometimes I would be asked to sing in exchange for sweets, that is when I also started to enter many music competitions.

TEC: Has music always been part of your family or you are the odd one so to say, to follow that direction?

PS: Yes, music has always been part of my family growing up, but I am the only one who took it as a career, and I must mention that it was not easy to convince my parents that I can make a career out of singing.

TEC : What do they think about you now, and what kind of music do you do?

PS: Now they support me but they still feel I am not serious about life, they still believe in a 9 to 5 job and getting paid at the end of the month. As for the genre I am stuck between Gospel and Afro Soul.

TEC: Tell us about your migration to the Gauteng province,  what made you make such a move and do you regret doing so?

PS:I came here in 2020 and it was during COVID - 19 and that period was tough. World Changers Church South Africa helped me with gigs and I also survived on my cooking business as I am also a chef. Life is better here than in the Eastern Cape as Gauteng is full of opportunities because the pie is bigger here.

TEC: I hear that its not as easy making it there, do you see yourself getting that piece of the pie?

PS: I think I am at the right place at the right time and I am happy I made the decision to come here, the highlight of my career so far is to be part of the top 25 for The Joyous Talent search which for is an achievment in itself.
